it was awesome! Your buddies played real good. There was bluesiness, but it was helped out by some Led Zeppelin-ness, (as far as I could tell) and I wonder if a bit of John Scofield-ness in there too. So it wasn't just straight-up blues, it was more creative than that.

LOL also someone handed him their camera, and he took some pics of himself while playing, then used the camera to do some hammer-ons. LOL

that's hilarious! how close was your seat?

Well Steve says one of his early influences was John Bonham so that doesn't surprise me. As for Scofield maybe John's been listening to a lot of fusion-y stuff courtesy of Steve (who has been workin with John on the new record)?

No seats! I was maybe 40 feet away. *grins*

That's hilarious, I was just guessing about the suspected Zep influence, I have only limited exposure to their music.

John recorded I Don't Need No Doctor with Scofield, on a tribute compilation. :D I was hoping some of Scofield's wacky stylings would rub off on Mayer, and from last night, I do believe it has happened a bit.

I would have hated to see Mayer stagnate in the same blues soloing style his whole career. I'm glad he's being exposed to a kaleidoscope of different music styles.

yeah blues rock has its limitations that's for sure. having played blues covers in bands i can attest to hearing the same predictable I, IV, V progression over and over is not fun. luckily with john's stuff he's keeping it away from the standard twelve bar dreck and going for more of the zeppelin vibe!

Was just re-listening to that live MP3 you posted a few back and I can see where the Zeppelin part comes in. He's doing a lot of Jimmy Page style riffs in "Good Love..." and Rush was influenced by Zeppelin in their early days so it's understandable where you could hear the Rush thing. Good stuff nonetheless.

Jimmy Page riffs: is that the "bammina bammina bammina bammina bam bam BAM bam"?

I didn't realize I had absorbed Rush to that extent.

Yep. and those hammer on thing are Page as well. Akin to Zeppelin IV era stuff.

well if you have listened to any classic rock radio (consciously or unconsciously) it would be inevitable to hear Rush at some point.

I knew I had heard Rush & Led Zep, didn't know I could nail it on the head like that though.
