Well, yet more cooking experimentation.
My mom makes a meat pie, it is not like a tortiere; its basis is chunks of cooked roast beef, and in it is gravy, peas & carrots, and there is a pie crust on top.
So I tried making it today. I used canned gravy, heated it up, added meat & vegetables, made a pie crust from Bisquick - adding some shortening and a bit of milk. After it was baked, it smelled good, overall, and the gravy-peas-pastry combination tastes authentic enough. But I added potatoes which made the filling look a bit like a giant samosa. And the teabiscuit-mix pie crust, on top of the filling, looked like... an exploded teabiscuit. The mixture rises and gets puffy; maybe I will add some flour to it next time to dilute the baking powder-ness. It almost looked like a thin layer of dumpling. Mmmm. Dumplings. Now I will have to make teabiscuits. I am trying not to eat too much bread or pasta, so maybe that's why everything pastry-like is Yum!
The meat still looks sketchy, so I have a ways to go with that still. hmm. However the rest of the dish was good enough that I could leave out the meat, and still have something yummy to nuke at work for dinner.
