I did something pretty stupid today, I went to the parish picnic. I felt out of place, going just by myself, when I saw all the little kids tumbling around the graveyard and church buildings. It kind of seemed like an SCA event, only without the crazy garb: had to find a place to park, people sat in lawn chairs under those tarpy tent things, people walking around looking like they were about to organize something, kids racing around. The purpose of my trip was to network a bit with the other church musicians, and say hello to the priest, whom I haven't had a conversation with ever, and he has been here the better part of a year now.
Well I immediately bumped into a friend of my dad's, who is also the dad of my highschool chum. He spoke to some child, and I asked him how many grandkids he has total, cause I knew he had at least two, etc etc. I said, wow! I said some remark about how I don't have grandkids yet, meaning to be funny. He leaned in conspiratorally and said how not all of us are "called" to be parents and my mind kind of shut off after that to the exact wording he used. (He is on a Dr. Phil level of frank communication with my dad due to their counselling roles in our church.) He then needed to reclaim his lawn chair, and we said our goodbyes, I randomly recognized a person as being in my frosh week at university, and then I started bawling and left immediately, having spent a grand total of 5 min at this thing. "Called?" Who are you calling not "called?" I am SO "called" to be a wife and mum, I just am circling on the tarmac, waiting for word on which runway I am to take off on. At least I didn't drop acid while babysitting, like SOME people who are now parents!!! Some of whom didn't actually ever intend to be or want to be parents! jkkjsfdlsdk
