This began as a comment in someone else's journal but it got kinda long so I parked it here.
I am actually envious that you have top 40 radio.
In Toronto, we have:
Mix99.9 - some new-ish stuff, but hits that are at least 2 years old for the most part
CHFI 98.1 music to snooze by when you're working in an office
Edge 102, Q107 Angry young man music, and toked up old man music respectively.
Flow93.5 Top 40 hip hop & *I think* reggae/soca/dancehall & associated music. I mean it will pound the car speakers but it's not exactly all hip hop in the strictest sense of the word.
AM radio is a wasteland of:
680 News - not a wasteland, but simply how it sounds. News. Meant for quick updates of traffic etc. but I end up listening to it for whole car trips.
Everything else keeps changing formats and losing money, none of it the old-school top 40 from when I was in high school.
So... not even a decent top 40 AM station anymore. I listen to Flow 93.5 because at least its music isn't old.
I do listen to CBC Radio One, but often their music is Music To Paint Your Cottage By. ZZZZZZzzzzzzz... If I'm working on the weekend, I don't need to be reminded that most people aren't.
In Ireland there was a station that played.. ready? hits of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s, all in a jumbly back-to-back mixup. It was great because in the car, my parents & my sister and I didn't have to move the radio preset at all; there was somethign for everyone.
