I have figured out a way to get myself out of this deep blue funk I have been in for the past few months.

Part of the solution might come out of my problem. I have been at my job for three years now, and I thought, perhaps it's time to update my skills. Not every graphics job needs my extensive knowledge of Chyron fonts.

I want a PC for so many USB tasks it makes my head spin. I am going to get a machine good enough for surfing, email and burning CDs. When I rent a multitrack recorder, I can dump the data via its USB port, and burn it to a CD, also my cellphone only speaks to PCs. I want to get a new or almost-new XP machine. I use XP at work and I like it.

I am going to get a Mac too. I will need a reasonably powerful Mac for Photoshop, After Effects and audio editing. I was delaying this because it's going to be expensive to buy Photoshop, Illustrator, Cubase, etc. all over again. However I will need up-to-date skills with the Mac OS, and Illustrator and Photoshop anyhow, to remain employable in my field. I want to learn After Effects; I have put it on my Goals on my yearly work review for 2 years in a row. Chop chop.

With my old PC, I am going to have someone install Linux on it. I would love to install it myself, but I do not have enough knowledge about PC hardware to do that, and not enough spare time to learn so much from scratch. I bought a how-to book three years ago, and I got as far as a BOOT FAILED message.

The money I spend, I figure I haven't spent as much as a dollar on computers for the past three years, I should just do it and not worry. I have a kind of spending block; I go home from the mall when I figure I've almost spent too much money.

Welllll, I was going to go into some close-by Mom & Pop style computer store for the XP machine, and Red Tag (www.redtagcomputer.com/) for the Mac. I won't need any Windows software, I just need shareware FTP etc. stuff but I will probably get my Mac software at Red Tag as well. I'm not sure who will install Linux on my PC though. I think it will need some work as it won't boot up anymore. :P

I can help with the Linux set. I did the same thing with the beater I built last year. I have some background with this stuff and would be happy to help out!

Red Tag is definitely one of the best places to buy a Mac (although U of T has the best prices... definitely buy the software from U of T!!!! I saved a bundle!)
