I had a surprise half-day at work. Tuesdays can be pretty slack anyhow, so I ahve started doing prompter because there is not much chyron work on Tues for that particular shift. So prompter was cool... I had made some chyron slates before that. Guess what? We started at 9 and were done at 11:30. I have my class at 6:30, so I didn't plan on killing 7 hours at work, so I went home. After I got home, after I had a nice 3 hour nap and cleaned my bathroom and did some Mac Os X related reading, it occurred mildly to me that perhaps I could have killed a little more time at work, but I would have had to wait till 2 for some stuff to observe. Then it occurred to me after my class, that I could have gone to some completely different job station and gotten started learning someone else's job - to kill time, but as a possible investment in covering their shift at some point when they are sick. We get creative trying to kill time sometimes at work... it's NOT like that every week, just once every 3 weeks, then not every day. Maybe 2-3 days out of the 3 week rotation. AND sometimes it's 1pm-10pm shifts, so it all balances out. But killing time with no clear objective is painful.

When I worked in foods at Wonderland, it was clean clean clean. Clean the counters, serving areas etc. If we were REALLY bored, ie a slow time at teh start of the season or a rainy day, we were told to just keep on cleaning, more out of the way areas, which likely could use it, eg. storage areas, and one extreme day, we were told to start cleaning the walls. So I am familiar with big corporation time-killing procedures. Don't lean and be idle, and for god's sake don't go home... FIND something to do.

I just have to remember all these creative things, eg. learning to do VTR or spending a day in aircheck again, BEFORE I bomb out the door and go home. It's 2 different mindsets, eg. "whoo hoo I'm going home" and "let me see... out of the cornucopia of job positions here, which one shall I try to learn today?"

In any case, if not for the Facebook and LJ surfing, I did okay at home re the internet stealing all my time away - I downloaded 1 1/2 weeks of Coronation St. storyline catchup webpages. whoo hoo. I had to re-read several days because I had forgotten what was going on.
