So I emailed them that I have no place to upload my files to, despite having access to the server. I can login, but I am denied permission to upload. I communicated that to them, and they want my login & password to test. Either I'll get somewhere or someone else has intercepted my emails and is going to login to my server and not be able to upload anything either. All I get is spam at that email address so I'm not too worried either way.

This whole internet trouble thing is reminding me of:

Flakes - Frank Zappa

Flakes! Flakes!
Flakes! Flakes!

They don't do no good
They never be workin'
When they oughta should
They waste your time
They're wastin' mine
California's got the most of them
Boy, they got a host of them
Swear t'God they got the most
At every business on the coast
Swear t'God they got the most
At every business on the coast
They got the Flakes

Flakes! Flakes!

They can't fix yer brakes
You ask 'em, "Where's my motor?"
"Well it was eaten by snakes . . ."
You can stab 'n' shoot 'n' spit
But they won't be fixin' it
They're lyin' an' lazy
They can be drivin' you crazy
Swear t'God they got the most
At every business on the coast
Swear t'God they got the most
At every business on the coast
[Take it away, Bob. . .]

I asked as nice as I could
If my job would
Somehow be finished by Friday
Well, the whole damn weekend
Came 'n' went, Frankie
[Wanna buy some mandies, Bob?]
'N'they didn't do nothin'
But they charged me double for Sunday
You know, no matter what you do
They gonna cheat 'n' rob you
Then they'll send you a bill
That'll get your senses reelin'
And if you do not pay
They got computer collectors
That'll get you so crazy
Til your head'll go through th' ceilin'
Yes it will!

I'm a moron 'n' this is my wife
She's frosting a cake
With a paper knife
All what we got here's
American made
It's a little bit cheesey,
But it's nicely displayed
Well we don't get excited when it
Crumbles 'n' breaks
We just get on the phone
And call up some Flakes
They rush on over
'N' wreck it some more
'N' we are so dumb
They're linin' up at our door
Well, the toilet went crazy
Yesterday afternoon
The plumber he says
"Never flush a lampoon!"
This great information
Cost me half a week's pay
And the toilet blew up
Later on the next day ay-eee-ay
Blew up the next day WOO-OOO

We are millions 'n' millions
We're coming to get you
We're protected by unions
So don't let it upset you
Can't escape the conclusion
It's probably God's Will
That civilization
Will grind to a standstill
And we are the people
Who will make it all happen
While yer children is sleepin',
Yer puppy is crappin'
You might call us Flakes
Or something else you might coin us
But we know you're so greedy
That you'll probably join us
We're comin' to get you, we're comin' to get you
We're comin' to get you, we're comin' to get you
We're comin' to get you, we're comin' to get you
We're comin' to get you, we're comin' to get you

Wow! That's SO awesome that you quoted Frank! Totally made my day! Putting Zoot Allures, Sheik Yerbouti and Joe's Garage in the CD changer now!

Frank rules! I got Sheik Yerbouti on vinyl, higher-priced than I think was necessary for used, at a used place in Oakville, Kerr & Lakeshore. I think he's brilliant. The liner notes for this one instrumental that they combined 2 different tracks for "all of that sensitive interplay between bass & drums... never happened" LOLOLOLOL

To me, it represents the best era of Frank (well, this and Joe's Garage). Ike Willis, Patrick O'Hearn, Terry Bozzio and Tommy Mars, with Warren Cucurullo and Vinnie Colaiuta just around the corner.

As much as I enjoyed the early 80s band that included Steve Vai, I still think that he never had a band that came close to these guys until the ill-fated "Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life".

He was just SO brilliant. I wish that Dweezil's output was even a fraction as frequent, because I also love his stuff.

I'm a huge fan of Frank's earlier output (i.e., Mothers stuff like Hot Rats, Uncle Meat and others) but he did have flashes of brilliance throughout his career (i.e., Roxy and Elsewhere's "Stairway to Heaven" with the horns doing the guitar solo [I've heard Robert Plant was in the audience for that] as well as a reggae version of "Ring of Fire")

I do enjoy the early stuff, but for me it was the mid era stuff that really became the culmination of his humour in music, although Peaches En Regalia remains one of my favourite pieces of music. I have several different versions, many by Frank himself, with his various bands, and even one version with Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs playing it live with Dweezil Zappa. (Awww now I have to get out my earlier discs, cuz I need to hear Camarillo Brillo.... and Billy The Mountain, thanks Jeff, for reminding me how great that stuff is!).

The Stairway cut has a great story. Mike Keneally (guitar player for the ill-fated "Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life") and Scott Thunes (bass player for same) were talking to Frank about covers they could do, and they suggested Stairway, which Frank claimed to have never heard (this was in the late 80s). Scott and Mike were dumbfounded. How could he have never heard Stairway to Heaven? It was Stairway to Freakin' Heaven!!! Frank said that he just didn't listen to rock music.

Scott and Mike sang the song for him, including singing the guitar and flute parts. When the started singing the guitar solo, Frank loved it, and said, "Oh I love that horn part."

Scott and Mike said "What horn part?"

Frank sang it back, note for note.

"No Frank, that's the guitar solo." said Mike.

"No," said Frank. "I definitely hear horns."

I'm trying to hum Stairway to Heaven to myself but all that comes into my head is Kiss from a Rose or whatever by Seal. The beginnings of both songs are just similar enough.

DAMNIT! I always wonderd who scored that vinyl copy of "Sheik" from Cactus Records! I used to covet that thing and was heartbroken when I found out someone other than me bought it!

It does have a kind of Riverdale/Parkdale charm to it though. You must remember it is the oldest part of Oakville.

It is charming for sure! There are older parts along Lakeshore, a bit east of that as well.

I had a boyfriend several years ago who lived there, so for more than a year, I spent a lot of time in that area. There were always cheesy businesses opening and closing again on that street, must have been something in the water. Even the Bank of Montreal there is now gone.

I had another friend who briefly lived in the building on the northeast corner of Kerr & Lakeshore, she lived in a sketchy apt. with many people, and once a visitor stole her cellphone from the bathroom. Now that's sketchy!
