Learning A Musical Instrument As An Adult
Mar. 8th, 2005 08:40 pmRemember that the main reason learning an instrument when you are a child is easier, is that you have no adultly distractions to keep you from playing: sex, work, drinking, post-secondary education. So if you don't have any of these to do, it gets easier to learn. If you insist on doing one of more of those activities, well, do whatever possible to keep your focus during long stretches of practising: name your poison.
Tonight it's a combination of the Radiohead song There There, played irreverently in both rockabilly and fingerpicking styles, together with a good dinner and a good glass of wine, and most importantly, a clean apartment. I'm not all distracted looking in the fridge, or trying to clean up. Getting home from work at 6:30 pm also helped a lot.
