Well I did get lucky money from someone this year and I was ever so pleased. This year I found out that only married people give out the red envelopes to unmarried people. Last year I knew that unmarried people recieve them. One girl I spoke to said that many Chinese don't give it out anymore, that it's old fashioned. I think it's cool to be included in someone's new year festivities. (and when someone brings up a half-bottle of wine left over from some newsroom do) That girl came around with little lucky doodads containing chocolate (she's unmarried) and someone got a little maneki-neko, I got a weird money thing that looks like a toy boat.
Anyhow, in my red envelope, it wasn't just 2 loonies or 2 chocolate coins, it was five bucks! He didn't have to do THAT! I thanked him of course, and we talked about luck, and how he thought I deserved it. (luck) Now I am not (completely) superstitious. But I do think that if you have a positive attitude and feel special, then you will naturally make better decisions, and this luck-giving gesture from this person has made me feel SO special! And positive. :) So this year I am ready to make my own good luck.
Now I have to figure out where I put that feng shui book, to figure out where in my apartment would be the best place to put my lucky envelope.
