I went to a show tonight, Vulcan Dub Squad CD release party here in Mississauga, specifically Streetsville. It was a fun time, I had never been to an all ages show before and it was a fun atmosphere, it was a little intimate venue. I didn't actually get to see Vulcan Dub play... they're probably playing as I type this. I have to work early tomorrow so I bailed early. However I did get to see The Airfields, I know them sort of and I like their jangly music, so I caught up with them, and then danced with random people. More name-dropping: Chasing Dagmara, and the Quadriplegic Twelve. A fun time was had by all, well me anyhow.
It was cool to go to Streetsville, you drive up Mississauga Road; if you are not familiar with it, it is a main north-south road. The road transforms from 4 lane suburbia into 2 lanes, what you swear was a small Ontario town in the middle of nowhere, complete with Victorian houses and old trees.
The crowd there was fun, it was held at an old Masonic Lodge, still bearing that name. I remember high school having lots of different cliques separated into different tastes in music, but I couldn't discern any of that tonight, everyone was dancing crazily and jostling and friendly.
I think my parents lived in Streetsville, before I was born or maybe just after.
It is awfully nice to drive 10km to a night out, instead of going into Toronto. It feels realer to do stuff in my own neighborhood... well my own city anyhow. I found the info in
mississauga; how cool is that, otherwise I would have never found out the local things to do. yay LJ. Well if I ever went out of my apt. besides for work, I might meet people, but because I am dorky it is nice to find out from the internet, just show up and then people can hardly do anything cause you're there. Hah! I enjoyed the atmosphere in a Spock-like or Data-like way, maybe I will become a scenester. hmm. Can you see me hanging out with people half my age, with crazy Elton John sunglasses? Well one of those things happened tonight already ha ha.
I bought 2 CDs at the show, one by The Airfields with non-jewel case packaging, and one by the Quadriplegic Twelve whose music was intriguing. The Airfields' music is jangly 80s britpop guitars plus New Order-ey bass melody, with some Radiohead banananananana guitar as well. The Quadriplegic 12 used weirdo keyboard sounds, and I think just played drum sounds from the keyboards in lieu of having a drummer. They did things that my first instinct would be to think, "ooh, that would be real cheesy" yet it was so different and fun. Yay. The era of "hair band music for all!" is probably long over.
