(no subject)

I am wondering how can I learn more PC skills. PC as in installing Linux on a PC, and general Windows maintenance. I have two boat anchor computers to practice on, but I am really starting from zero with this. I understood Commodore 64 BASIC and I can use a solder gun, so I am quite sure I have the capability, but I don't know where to start. I tried installing Linux on a Pentium but I got as far as Boot Failure and didn't know where to start troubleshooting. What I need is someone to help me when I am going wrong. I wonder if the local computer store would help out if I ask nicely? hmmm.

hmm...maybe i can help. i'm an amateur computer tech (no credentials to back me up) but i've been building computers for years. i know of a couple of non-profit organizations where you can volunteer your time, and in exchange they will teach you all about computer hardware and software installation. I work for one such non-profit. If you are interested, let me know and give you some more details. =)
