I do enjoy the early stuff, but for me it was the mid era stuff that really became the culmination of his humour in music, although Peaches En Regalia remains one of my favourite pieces of music. I have several different versions, many by Frank himself, with his various bands, and even one version with Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs playing it live with Dweezil Zappa. (Awww now I have to get out my earlier discs, cuz I need to hear Camarillo Brillo.... and Billy The Mountain, thanks Jeff, for reminding me how great that stuff is!).
The Stairway cut has a great story. Mike Keneally (guitar player for the ill-fated "Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life") and Scott Thunes (bass player for same) were talking to Frank about covers they could do, and they suggested Stairway, which Frank claimed to have never heard (this was in the late 80s). Scott and Mike were dumbfounded. How could he have never heard Stairway to Heaven? It was Stairway to Freakin' Heaven!!! Frank said that he just didn't listen to rock music.
Scott and Mike sang the song for him, including singing the guitar and flute parts. When the started singing the guitar solo, Frank loved it, and said, "Oh I love that horn part."

Scott and Mike said "What horn part?"
Frank sang it back, note for note.
"No Frank, that's the guitar solo." said Mike.
"No," said Frank. "I definitely hear horns."
